Following the launch of its first Inspiration Lab in Silicon Valley, Brembo—one of the world’s leading brands in automotive braking systems—has unveiled its second global Inspiration Lab in Shanghai. The project is located in Wheelock Square, near Jing’an Temple, where the pulse of global finance meets the layered heritage of Shanghai. Here, the spirit of the city and the rhythm of the times flow freely. milanesi|paiusco translated Brembo’s pursuit of innovation and its vision of resonating with the city into a living architectural expression.

Home-like Office

The project merges Brembo’s Italian industrial heritage with the innovative energy of the Chinese context. Guided by the concept of “home-like office” the space is centered on employee well-being and creativity. The project redefines what an office can be—no longer a static container, but a dynamic spatial system in continuous flow. Here, human behavior itself becomes the driving force behind creativity and innovation, shifting the relationship between people and space from passive use to mutual activation.

Turning Energy into Inspiration

In response to Brembo’s brand theme, “Turning Energy into Inspiration,” the design aims to create a multi-sensory environment that not only supports work functions but actively stimulates inspiration. From spatial layout to material selection, every design decision serves the intention to foster new ideas. Physical movement becomes a metaphor for cognitive expansion: diagonally arranged walls disrupt conventional geometry, flowing circulation guides constant shifts in perspective, and movable furniture encourages flexible configurations and continuous spatial transformation.

Creativity in Movement

The zigzag layout breaks away from the rigidity of conventional corridors, expanding spatial use while introducing a new rhythm of movement. As people walk through the space, unexpected encounters and changing viewpoints activate the environment as a dynamic sensory field. The office is envisioned as a continuously flowing system, where circulation itself becomes a path designed for creative momentum.

Space as Inspiration Converter

The theme of “Turning Energy into Inspiration” finds its most explicit expression in the lobby, conceived as the beating heart of the project. Its circular floor plan simulates an energy field through enclosure, expansion, circulation, and reconfiguration. Sliding partitions function like gears, transforming the space from quiet reception to active experimentation, while semi-circular LED surfaces release visual energy and act as a focal point for collective attention. The spatial structure reflects the same precision, responsiveness, and adaptive performance that define Brembo’s braking systems.

Multi-sensory Orchestration

Multi-sensory orchestration further shapes the experience. Carefully balanced lighting minimizes glare while embracing natural daylight changes; acoustic strategies respond precisely to different spatial functions; contrasting materials introduce tactile richness; and greenery, color, and material choices support psychological comfort. Through this orchestration, the workspace becomes a responsive, living system.

Work Like a Team
Rather than reinforcing hierarchy, the open workspace promotes equality and collaboration. Positions are not defined by title, but by ideas. For milanesi|paiusco and Brembo, the Inspiration Lab is never a finished design, but an ongoing spatial experiment—where inspiration remains in motion and continuously evolves into new possibilities.
